Conrad Willems
Visual artist Conrad Willems reveals a fascinating artistic practice that encompasses a range of media, including drawing, sculpture and performance. Although born on the Belgian coast, his artistic habitat is mainly in Ghent, where he expresses his creative vision. Geometry, repetition and modularity form the core of his oeuvre, resulting in a recognisable visual language that permeates his works. His drawings, characterised by repetitive figures, embody the essence of freehand repetition, often resulting in complex patterns disrupted by subtle imperfections. These evolve from suggestive cityscapes to abstract forms, with each new form emerging from the imperfect process of repetition. Willems' sculptures follow a similar approach, exploring simple geometric shapes and then reproducing them in materials ranging from natural stone to concrete. These modular installations are often constructed live, with the construction process itself becoming a performance, creating a fascinating interaction between art and audience.
