Stefaan Van Biesen

In Stefaan van Biesen's work, an association has emerged between thinking, acting and well-being: “How do our thoughts manifest themselves through actions in our environment and to what extent do they contribute to our well-being?”. Van Biesen devotes a significant part of his artistic and international activities to exchanges and collaborations with artists and scientists from various disciplines. In doing so, he aims to update the nomadic aspect of Renaissance artists. Travel is seen as a laboratory of ideas: drawings, notes and other artefacts that arise from encounters with others. In his work, Stefaan van Biesen refers to the concept of “the body as a unit of measurement”: the use of the senses and the body as instruments of knowledge, experience and creativity. Since 1990, Stefaan Van Biesen has been building an extensive international oeuvre of drawings, designs, installations, photography, video, soundscapes and performances, which he aptly calls “urban rituals”. In addition to numerous solo exhibitions in Belgium, Van Biesen's work has been shown throughout Europe, as well as in the USA, Brazil and China. In 2019, van Biesen participated in the Venice Biennale with “Art Science Exhibits” (Berlin), while in the same year he carried out artistic research at the request of his municipality of Beveren on the historical figures Joos Vijd and Van Eyck. Stefaan van Biesen is a member and co-founder of the international platform the Milena Principle (2000), an independent international art platform that distinguishes itself through unconventional forms of art and influential debates
