Stief DeSmet

Artist Stief DeSmet is known for his versatile oeuvre, which includes sculptures, paintings, videos and installations. His work is characterised by recognisable symbols, some iconographically charged, which draw us into the world of ancient and contemporary myths, icons and idols. DeSmet creates images that allow us to linger in an idyllic environment while he plays with art history, as well as the templates and clichés of our imagination. He cuts symbols from various sources such as old prints, books and newspapers, and then incorporates them into unique paintings and sculptures. Through this manipulation of iconic images, DeSmet adds new layers of meaning and invites the viewer to engage in introspection. Admire Stief Desmet's “Giant Ikaros”, inspired by Icarus, the well-known figure from Greek mythology. Icarus and his father Daedalus escape from prison in Crete by building wings made of wood, feathers and wax. During their flight, Icarus must be careful that the wax between his wings does not melt by flying too high and too close to the sun. In his enthusiasm, Icarus becomes reckless and arrogant, causing him to fly too high, melt his wings and ultimately crash into the Aegean Sea. In Desmet's work, the polyhedrons symbolise the human urge to reduce and adapt everything in nature. People always have a desire for a natural and harmonious.
