Warre Mulder
Warre Mulder (Antwerp) is an artist whose sculptural practice encompasses a dynamic universe of transformations. His work balances on the border between humour and fantasy, liveliness and layering, spontaneity and purposefulness. Mulder's work for Amare hangs on the façade of Damme Town Hall. Made from textile, the work is a cross between a flag and a blanket. It is clearly visible from Damme's main square, where the statue of Jacob Van Maerlant also stands. This medieval writer wrote most of his books in Damme. Warre Mulder's work is inspired by Jacob Van Maerlant's description of the lion in his animal encyclopaedia “Der naturen bloeme”. According to him, there are three types of lions, two of which are weak and one of which is strong and noble: Lions of the first type are small and have rough fur and curly manes. These lions are neither strong nor fiery. Other lions, which are sired by the wild pardus, are neither noble nor courageous and have no manes. The noble lions, on the other hand, are large and smooth-haired, strong, fast and fearless. They have a noble disposition and know no falsehood.
