Guillaume Bijl

Self-taught artist Guillaume Bijl focuses primarily on the banality of our current consumer society in his artworks. After studying theatre and working as a set builder and painter, he began creating spatial objects in the 1970s and sought alternatives to conceptual art. His installations and compositions create everyday situations that seem familiar and completely recognisable, blurring the line between fiction and reality. Bijl's oeuvre, which he himself considers to be “realistic testimonies to visually come to terms with my time”, is a contemporary critique of consumer society. Bijl likes to take the viewer into a fictional reality in which the boundary between art and everyday life is blurred. With a keen sense of humour and irony, he criticises the absurdities of today's consumer society and challenges the viewer to question the veracity of his installations. The artist has also participated in several important art events such as the Venice Biennale and documenta IX in Kassel. His oeuvre remains topical and relevant, and his artworks act as mirrors that force us to reflect on the society in which we live.
